- Sept. 4, 1997 --The Committee will review four recent studies on rural and agricultural credit. The reports, by the General Accounting Office (GAO), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Rural Policy Research Institute
(RUPRI) and the Kansas City Fed, examine the availability of capital in rural America. The Committee will also discuss a recent proposal by Sen. Robert Bennett (R-UT) to create a Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corporation
(Farmer Mac) pilot program to help meet lending needs in rural areas. The program would expand Farmer Mac's authority to purchase rural small business loans and unguaranteed business and industry loans from lenders, opening
a secondary market for rural loans. Farmer Mac is currently eligible to purchase and securitize agricultural mortgages, rural home loans, and USDA guaranteed loans. 9a.m. in SR-328A.
