  • December 16, 1998 -- A  hearing to review the progress of a study on over-the-counter derivatives by the President's Working Group on Financial Markets.  The hearing will also provide committee members an opportunity to discuss the factors contributing to the collapse of the Long Term Capital hedge fund.  The hearing will take place at 9 a.m. in SR-328a

  • August 13, 1998 -- A field hearing to consider wheat pricing and other grower issues will be held in Lewiston, Idaho.  The hearing will be chaired by Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) and will begain at 1:30 pm at the Red Lion Inn in Lewiston, Idaho.

  • July 31, 1998 -- A nomination hearing to consider pending nominations to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA). The hearing will begin at 9 a.m. in SR-328A.
  •  July 30, 1998 -- A hearing for the review of a recent concept release by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission on over-the-counter derivatives and related legislation proposed by the Treasury Department, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and the Securities and Exchange Commission.  Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, CFTC Commissioner Brooksley Born and representatives of the Securities Exchange Commission and the Treasury will testify.  The hearing will begin at 9 a.m. in SD-106.

  • July 22, 1998 -- A hearing to examine of the Year 2000 (Y2K) dilemma as it relates to agricultural business and other economic matters.   Y2K analyst Edward Yardeni, chief economist for the international investment firm Deutsche Morgan Grenfell, is scheduled to testify.  The hearing will begin at 9 a.m. in SR-328A.

  • April 2, 1998 --  A hearing to examine legislation introduced by Sen. Harkin (S.1323) in October that would set minimum national standards for the environmentally sound management of animal waste.  The Animal Agriculture Reform Act, S.1323, would require large livestock and poultry operations to follow animal waste management plans focused on using manure for crop nutrients and preventing water pollution. The hearing will take place at 9 a.m. in SR-328A.

  • March 10, 1998 --  The crop insurance program has grown in recent years, but so have its problems.  Taxpayer costs are rising and the program discourages product innovation by private insurers.  The program also faces funding uncertainty in the annual appropriations process.  The Committee will meet to consider market-oriented improvements to better serve farmers' evolving risk management needs. The hearing will take place at 9 a.m. in SR-328A.
