WASHINGTON—Senator Debbie Stabenow released the following statement on Senate passage of the bipartisan bill to avoid default:
“It was absolutely critical for our economy and our families that we avoided default. I’m pleased that this agreement protects the important steps that we’ve taken over the last two years to rebuild America, bring jobs home, lower the costs of health care and tackle the climate crisis.”
“I am however deeply disappointed by the changes that were agreed to relating to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. As Chair of the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee, it is my intent to produce a bipartisan Farm Bill that protects critical nutrition and food assistance programs for all Americans, including children, families and seniors. And as far as I am concerned, the issue of work requirements is settled for this Congress.”
“We will not further erode the dignity of Americans who simply need a little help – about $6 a day – to buy food.”
